Student Leadership

LSU's new-look Student Leadership allows our pupils from the lower school and our students in the sixth form to work together across the many facets of the school to enhance the academic and pastoral education we deliver. Divided into Committees and Support Groups, these two broad-reaching areas come together once a term as a school council and report progress to the Headteacher and Governors.

LSU has a strong commitment to taking the views of young  people seriously, providing opportunities for students to take part in activities and decision making and for them to participate in pastoral and community programmes within the school.

Students have run campaigns on issues such as shadism and sexual exploitation, have organised charity fundraising events and most recently planned and organised the Women of the World (‘WOW’) Festival which celebrated feminist ideas, poetry, campaigns and music. Year Councils have consulted their forms on a wide range of issues from homework policy, bullying policy, playground facilities, end of term events and many changes have been introduced as a consequence.  Our skilled and committed group of peer mentors provide exceptional support to year 7 pupils and their form tutors.

In response to the growing wish of students to shape their own lives and the world in which they live, the school now runs Student Leadership conferences. During these conferences, pupils work in their respective teams, councils and committees to learn essential skills and plan for the forthcoming year. Workshops for Councils and Committees include project management, assertiveness, speech writing and presentation and running a committee. Academic mentors and prefects receive additional training in supporting literacy, role boundaries and child protection.

Chairs of committees and councils have the chance to share ideas and present progress reports at termly School Council meetings attended by the Headteacher and Governors.

Our next Student Leadership Conference Day will be held on Friday 2nd October from 9.30am until 12.45pm.
