Earth Day

Earth Day

LSU students proved fantastic caretakers of our planet ahead of Earth Day on Friday 22nd April. Mathilde, Ana, Isabel and Casey in year 10 and Helen, Sophia, Saima and Leroy in year 12 from the Geography Society signed up to multiple projects as part of an eco event held at the school on Thursday 21st April. The year 10s plan on supporting a Camden Clean Air Initiative Cycle Ride on 12th June while the sixth formers have started their work experience with the Camden Clean Air Initiative. The leaders of the Society are also keen to host a similar event at the rest of the LaSWAP Sixth Form Consortium. Look out for more news on this soon as well as future volunteering at the Heath and ‘Cooking and Eating together’ sessions which will support student wellbeing and the planet.

On Thursday 21st April, Ms De’Ath took a group of year 10 and 12 students to an Earth Day celebration event at University College School Hampstead.

The key note speakers were Formular-E, Camden Clean Air Initiative, and the UCS Green Impact Group. These were all very inspirational talks from a company which is a leading example of sustainable business/sport, a local Camden based charity which supported the organisation of the event, and a student-led sustainability group focusing on small scale actions.

If you are interested in finding out more about Formular-E please check out their website https://www.fiaformulae.com/and look out for their London event taking place in London Excel on 30th and 31st July 2022.

The second part of the session involved the exploration of Sustainability Zones, which included a range of companies, charities and informative stalls that were themed to provide an opportunity to learn/support/get involved in sustainable activities.

  1. Clean mobility
  2. Sustainable Energy & Construction
  3. Air Quality
  4. Waste/Recycling
  5. Rewilding/Biodiversity
  6. Food
  7. Impact

The companies that were in attendance included: National Grid, ConnectR, Hampstead Heath, Tier, Google, Tesla, Club Eat and Veolia.

All students had a fantastic time and walked away inspired to get involved in some projects and volunteering. We look forward to discussing and making plans at our next Geography Society event. This included the Sixth Form students signing up to complete work experience with Camden Clean Air Initiative, and year 10s signing up to marshal at the Camden Clean Air Initiative Bike Ride on 12th June.

We hope that after witnessing this inspirational event we can host a similar one in the future here at LSU or at LaSWAP.
