Lord Russell of Liverpool inspires bright starts at La Sainte Union

On Friday, 22nd November, students at our school had the unique opportunity to engage with Lord Russell of Liverpool as part of the UK Parliament's Learn with the Lords programme. The visit was highly anticipated and did not disappoint, providing students with a deeper understanding of the workings of the House of Lords and its significant role in the UK government.

Lord Russell addressed students from years 9, 10, and 11, offering insights into the legislative process, the importance of holding the government to account, and the various ways the House of Lords contributes to national governance through its committee work. His engaging presentation highlighted the intricacies of law-making and the critical oversight functions performed by the Lords.

In addition to his talk, Lord Russell participated in a 45-minute Q&A session with school council members and A level politics students from years 12 and 13. This interactive session allowed students to ask probing questions and gain firsthand knowledge from a seasoned member of the House of Lords.

The visit left a lasting impression on the students, many of whom expressed their appreciation and deepened interest in politics. Lynn, a year 10 student, shared her thoughts: "I enjoyed the session because it allowed me to get a wider understanding of the different parts of Parliament. Lord Russell told us some interesting facts about the House of Lords and the impact they have on young people's lives. It helped me to learn about politics as a career path and reinforced my belief in the importance of voting."

Kaelyn, also in year 10, remarked, "This visit from Lord Russell furthered my interest in politics and understanding of the House of Lords environment. I really appreciated his insight, his ability to be self-critical, and the way he resonated with the youth. His passion for environmental issues and social and civic duties made me want to find out more about these fields."

Lucy, another year 10 student, found the session enlightening: "I believe that the session was a great opportunity. It developed my understanding of the UK parliament and the inner workings of it. For example, I learnt there are around 800 people in the House of Lords as opposed to 650 people in the House of Commons. Overall, I think that this was a great opportunity and it boosted my interest in politics."

Jayzel, also in year 10, added, "I really enjoyed this experience. It gave an insight into UK politics, especially as a young UK citizen. It matters how we can change our country and make a difference. I learnt how bills turn into acts and how laws are passed, and Lord Russell speaking out for social changes was inspiring. I highly recommend this for other schools."

The Headteacher, Sophie Fegan, praised the event, saying,

We are incredibly grateful to Lord Russell for taking the time to visit our school. His visit has undoubtedly inspired our students and provided them with a valuable perspective on the workings of our government. This experience has enriched their understanding of politics and civic responsibility.

Lord Russell's visit was a resounding success, leaving students more informed and enthusiastic about their role in the democratic process. The Learn with the Lords programme continues to be an invaluable resource for schools, fostering a greater understanding of the UK's political system among young people.
